Speech of Honourable Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in DEI

Evolution of unique performers

Righteousness in the heart
leads to beauty in the character

Friends, before I begin my address I would like to share a special memory with all of you. When I entered into DEI campus today, I remembered a great and rare scene when I visited here in 1993. When I reached the campus, Prof. Satsangi guided me, showing the Director’s room, various departments, I went through main roads, smaller road - and then walked through a narrow agriculture footpath. Walking on this footpath, I reached the fields. I was surprised to find Professor MB Lal Saheb, working in the fields and removing the weeds by hand. I was astonished and inspired by his humility and dignity for field work and I have been spreading the message of DEI wherever I go. I realized when the professor and the chief of the organization when he removes the weed so that the paddy crops grows without and any hindrance. Such a professor, such a hon’ble professor such a saintly professor, definitely remove the weed growing everyday human lives. I am very happy to see such a great personality in this campus. My respect and greetings to Professor Lal Saheb.

I am delighted to deliver the diamond jubilee memorial lecture at the Dayalbagh Educational Institute (DEI) in a serene environment at the outskirts of the historic city of Agra. My greetings to all of you. While I am with you, I am reminded of the important quotation by Rev. Prof. MB Lal Saheb, Founder Director of DEI. He says: "It is the quality of work that makes a university great." DEI is exemplified by this statement in letter and spirit. I am happy that DEI has a vision of becoming one among the top 20 universities by this year in the country, through the promotion of excellence in instruction and research within its special social, moral and spiritual framework. Our country in the last six decades after our Independence with its democratic setup, has shown significant progress in many fields like economy, agriculture, scientific development, infrastructure and healthcare. We have a road map for India becoming a developed nation by 2020. However, we have many challenges to overcome to achieve a peaceful and prosperous nation for the billion population. Fundamental to this is education with value system. Hence, while I am with you, I would like to talk on the topic "Evolution of unique performers".

Friends, first I would like narrate how my teacher inspired me with a mission for my life.

Inspiration from teacher for a mission of life for student

My primary school teacher Shri Sivasubramaniya Iyer whenever I saw him he radiated knowledge. Also he radiated purity of life through his Gandhian lifestyle from home to school and everywhere. Shri Siva Subramania Iyer was one of the very good teachers in our school. All of us loved to attend his class and hear him. One day he was teaching about bird’s flight. He drew a diagram of a bird on the blackboard depicting the wings, tail and the body structure with the head. He explained how the birds create the lift and fly. He also explained to us how they change direction while flying. Nearly for 25 minutes he gave the lecture with various information such as lift, drag, how the birds fly in a formation of 10, 20 or 30. At the end of the class, he wanted to know whether we understood how the birds fly. I said, I did not understand how the birds fly. When I said this, the teacher asked the other students whether they understood or not. Many students said that they also did not understand. He did not get upset by our response since he was a committed teacher.

Our teacher said that he would take all of us to the sea shore. That evening the whole class was at the sea shore of Rameswaram. We enjoyed the roaring sea waves knocking at the sandy hills in the pleasant evening. Birds were flying with sweet chirping voice. He showed the sea birds in formations of 10 to 20 numbers. We saw the marvelous formations of birds with a purpose and we were all amazed. He showed us the birds and asked us to see that when the birds fly, what they looked like. We saw the wings flapping. He asked us to look at the tail portion with the combination of flapping wings and twisting tail. We noticed closely and found that the birds in that condition flew in the direction they desired. Then he asked us a question, where the engine is and how it is powered. Bird is powered by its own life and the motivation of what it wants. All these things were explained to us within Fifteen minutes. We all understood the whole bird dynamics from this practical example. How nice it was? Our teacher was a great teacher; he could give us a theoretical lesson coupled with a live practical example available in nature. This is real teaching.

For me, it was not merely an understanding of how a bird flies. The bird's flight entered into me and created a special feeling. From that evening, I thought that my future study has to be with reference to flight and flight systems. I am saying this because my teacher's teaching and the event that I witnessed decided my future career. Then one evening after the classes, I asked the teacher, “Sir, please tell me, how to progress further in learning all about flight.” He patiently explained to me that I should complete 8th class, and then go to high school, and then I should go to engineering college that may lead to education on flight. If I complete all my education with excellence, I might do something connected with flight sciences. This advice and the bird flying exercise given by my teacher, really gave me a goal and a mission for my life. When I went to college, I took Physics. When I went to engineering in Madras Institute of Technology, I took Aeronautical Engineering.

Thus my life was transformed as a rocket engineer, aerospace engineer and technologist. That one incident of my teacher teaching the lesson, showing the visual live example proved to be a turning point in my life which eventually shaped my profession.

Friends, what is needed India today from youth, is the cultural of excellence and unique performance?

Culture of excellence

Friends, excellence is not by accident. It is a process, where an individual, (or organization or nation,) continuously strives to better oneself. The performance standards are set by themselves, they work on their dreams with focus and are prepared to take calculated risks and do not get deterred by failures as they move towards their dreams. Then they step up their dreams as they tend to reach the original targets. They strive to work to their potential, in the process, they increase their performance thereby multiplying further their potential and this is an unending life cycle phenomenon. They are not in competition with anyone else, but themselves. That is the culture of excellence. The culture of excellence needs an organization more youth with creativity who strive to be unique.

Unique You

Dear friends, Look up, what do you see, the light, the electric bulbs. Immediately, our thoughts go to the inventor Thomas Alva Edison, for his unique contribution towards the invention of electric bulb and his electrical lighting system. When you hear the sound of aeroplane going over your house, whom do you think of? Wright Brothers who proved that “objects heavier than air can be flown.” Whom does the telephone remind you of? Of course, Alexander Graham Bell. When everybody considered a sea travel as an experience or a voyage, a unique person questioned the phenomena he saw, during his sea travel from United Kingdom to India. He was pondering on why the horizon where the sky and sea meet looks blue? His research resulted in the phenomena of scattering of light. Of course, Sir CV Raman was awarded Nobel Prize.

When we are all in the campus of Dayalbagh Educational Institute, Agra, we see a unique light – light of education, light of evolution – a complete man through its multiple educational institutions of Art, Humanity and Engineering. Whom do you remember for creation of such great mission of building a great citizen for the nation - Rev Prof MB Lal Saheb and his team.

For the last four days the entire nation is proudly celebrating the unique position India has achieved in world cricket. It is the result of years of nurturing talent and hard work. The country has achieved amongst top most position in the world in all three major dimensions of cricket - test, one day and the 20:20 cricket matches. Whom should we attribute this greatest achievement, which has inspired the country specially youth of India. The entire team needs appreciation including, the past teams of cricket young and experienced, the coaches and the supporting staff. Over the years many veterans have contributed to this prominent position in cricket. Of course, captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni comes out clearly with the leadership quality that "when problem occurs you become the captain of the problem, defeat the problem and succeed". I am sure that the experience of cricket will be useful to other sports and other areas of development of country, particularly the ignited the minds of the youth.

Inventions, discoveries and achievements have emanated from creative minds that have been constantly working and imaging the outcome in the mind. With imaging and constant effort, all the forces of the universe work for that inspired mind, thereby leading to inventions and discoveries. The question is: are you willing to become a unique personality. Let me share an experience.

I have, so far, met 11 million youth in India and abroad, in a decade's time. I learnt, "every youth wants to be unique, that is, YOU! But the world all around you, is doing its best, day and night, to make you just "everybody else".

The challenge, my young friends, is that you have to fight the hardest battle, which any human being can ever imagine to fight; and never stop fighting until you arrive at your destined place, that is, a UNIQUE YOU! I am sure DEI is evolving "unique you" in you. And you have to be unique too. Do you want to be a Unique You or Everybody else? If you have to be Unique You, you have to do, what Alexander Graham Bell suggested in 1905:

"Don't keep forever on the public road, going only where others have gone. Leave the beaten track occasionally and dive into the woods. You will be certain to find something you have never seen before. It will be a little thing, but do not ignore it. Follow it up, explore all around it; one discovery will lead to another, and before you know it, you will have something worth thinking about."

………… Alexander Graham Bell
Friends, since DEI is providing unique education with innovation and entrepreneurship, I would like to share with you the growth of convergence of technologies, which is the focus for the new decade.

Convergence of technologies: info-bio-nano and ecology

The information technology and communication technology have already converged leading to Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Information Technology combined with bio-technology has led to bio-informatics. Similarly, Photonics is grown out from the labs to converge with classical Electronics and Microelectronics to bring in new high speed options in consumer products. Flexible and unbreakable displays using thin layer of film on transparent polymers have emerged as new symbols of entertainment and media tools. Now, Nano-technology has come in. It is the field of the future that will replace microelectronics and many fields with tremendous application potential in the areas of medicine, electronics and material science. I am sure about the use of nano-robot for drug delivery. When Nano technology and ICT meet, integrated silicon electronics, photonics are born and it can be said that material convergence will happen. With material convergence and biotechnology linked, a new science called Intelligent Bioscience will be born which would lead to a disease free, happy and more intelligent human habitat with longevity and high human capabilities. Convergence of bio-nano-info technologies can lead to the development of nano robots. Nano robots when they are injected into a patient, my expert friends say, it will diagnose and deliver the treatment exclusively in the affected area and then the nano-robot gets digested as it is a DNA based product. I saw the product sample in one of the labs in South Korea where best of minds with multiple technology work with a target of finding out of the box solution.

Now, a new trend is emerging. The aspect being introduced is that of Ecology. Globally, the demand is shifting towards development of sustainable systems which are technologically superior. This is the new dimension of the 21st century knowledge society, where science and environment will go together. Thus the new age model would be a four dimensional bio-nano-info-ecology based.

Now let me give my experience of system design, system integration and system management which I had during my studies at MIT Madras (1954-57).

Learning integrated system design

I was assigned a project to design a low-level attack aircraft together with six other colleagues. I was given the responsibility of system design and system integration by integrating the team members. Also, I was responsible for aerodynamic and structural design of the project. The other five of my team took up the design of propulsion, control, guidance, avionics and instrumentation of the aircraft. My design teacher Prof. Srinivasan, the then Director of MIT, was our guide. He reviewed the project and declared my work to be gloomy and disappointing. He didn't lend an ear to my difficulties in bringing together data base from multiple designers. I asked for a month’s time to complete the task, since I had to get the inputs from five of my colleagues without which I cannot complete the system design. Prof. Srinivasan told me "Look, young man, today is Friday afternoon. I give you three days time. By Monday morning, if I don't get the configuration design, your scholarship will be stopped." I had a jolt in my life, as scholarship was my lifeline, without which I cannot continue with my studies. There was no other way out but to finish the task. My team felt the need for working together round the clock. We didn’t sleep that night, working on the drawing board skipping our dinner. On Saturday, I took just an hour's break. On Sunday morning, I was near completion, when I felt someone's presence in my laboratory. It was Prof. Srinivasan studying my progress. After looking at my work, he patted and hugged me affectionately. He had words of appreciation: "I knew I was putting you under stress and asking you to meet a difficult deadline. You have done great job in system design".

Through this review mechanism Prof Srinivasan, really injected the necessity of understanding the value of time by each team member and brought out engineering education has to lead system design, system integration and system management. I realized that if something is at stake, the human minds get ignited and the working capacity gets enhanced manifold. That’s what exactly happened. This is one of the techniques of building talent. The message is that young in the organization, whatever is their specialization, be trained to systems approach and projects, which will prepare them for new products, innovation and undertaking higher organizational responsibilities. Friends, you should get ready to acquire knowledge in an integrated way for using multiple disciplines towards product development and its management.

Friends, when you complete your study from DEI, you will be entering into a phase when India would need a new type of inspired youth to take up 10 pillars of development of the nation. What are they:

Distinctive Profile of India by 2020

1. A Nation where the rural and urban divide has reduced to a thin line.

2. A Nation where there is an equitable distribution and adequate access to energy and quality water.

3. A Nation where agriculture, industry and service sector work together in symphony.

4. A Nation where education with value system is not denied to any meritorious candidates because of societal or economic discrimination.

5. A Nation, which is the best destination for the most talented scholars, scientists, and investors.

6. A Nation where the best of health care is available to all.

7. A Nation where the governance is responsive, transparent and corruption free.

8. A Nation where poverty has been totally eradicated, illiteracy removed and crimes against women and children are absent and none in the society feels alienated.

9. A Nation that is prosperous, healthy, secure, devoid of terrorism, peaceful and happy and continues with a sustainable growth path.

10. A Nation that is one of the best places to live in and is proud of its leadership.

Integrated Action for developed India

To achieve the distinctive profile of India, we have the mission of transforming India into a developed nation. We have identified five areas where India has a core competence for integrated action: (1) Agriculture and food processing (2) Education and Healthcare (3) Information and Communication Technology (4) Reliable and Quality Electric power, Surface transport and Infrastructure for all parts of the country. (5) Self-reliance in critical technologies. These five areas are closely inter-related and will be progressing in a coordinated way will lead to food, economic and national security. I find that rightly DEI is laying emphasis on agriculture, and rural development, which are vital for national development.
